Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad

 

 

The Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad is a narrow gauge heritage railroad located in Flint, Michigan. The Huckleberry Railroad was so named because it ran so slow. A person could jump off the train, pick a few huckleberries, and jump back on the train with minimum effort. According to the story this railroad received its name because of its slowness, it was said that a person could literally jump from the train pick huckleberries and get back on the train without difficulty.

 

 

The Huckleberry Road can be traced by to 1857 as being part of the Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company. Kids enjoy the simple pleasure of riding on the Huckleberry Railroad for a 40 minute journey on their Baldwin steam locomotive which travels along the shores of Mott Lake, along a part of historic Pere Marquette roadbed and returning into the heart of Crossroads Village.

 

 

One of the most popular events is the Day Out with Thomas event because the ride is 40 minutes long and it spans the 8 mile track! Children also get the opportunity to take their photo with Sir Topham Hatt from the Island of Sodor. Other special activities include the Crossroads Village School Days Program where Teachers can involve their kids in a one of kid learning experience in Michigan’s only authentic 1800’s village. There is the Genesee Belle, a beautiful Paddlewheel Riverboat which is a replica of the riverboats during the era of Mark Twain that traveled down the might Mississippi River. For Opera lovers there is the Horton-Colwell Opera House built in 1869 by Dexter Horton and David Colwell near the corner of Leroy and Caroline Streets in Fenton.
